China and the US wrapped up their sixth round of trade talks in Paris on Monday, with the agenda ranging from a possible extension of bilateral tariff and non-tariff measures as well as bilateral investment.
“China and the US conducted deep, frank and constructive consultations,” Chinese vice commerce minister Li Chenggang said.
Both sides agreed to “continue to maintain the stability of tariffs” and discussed the possibility of establishing a mechanism for promoting bilateral investment, said Li, one of the lead negotiators in the two days of talks.
The two sides achieved some preliminary consensus on some of the subjects and would continue dialogue.
He said China noted that the United States had introduced “quite a few” restrictive measures against China on the trade and economy front.
Beijing also expressed opposition to the Section 301 investigations announced by the Office of the US Trade Representative last week.
“We will follow closely these investigations and take timely measures to safeguard China’s legitimate interests,” he added.


Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not appear to take part in the second day of talks, and the delegations that arrived at the venue on Monday – the OECD headquarters in the French capital – were smaller than those seen on Sunday.
In an interview with American news service CNBC, Bessent said the talks were “very good” and relations between the world’s two biggest economies were “stable”.
“I will be issuing a statement in the next few days, and it will be reaffirming the stability in the relationship between the first and second-largest economies in the world,” he said.
According to Bessent, the discussions focused mainly on purchase commitments from China.
US officials also explained how the White House would press ahead with tariffs and the Section 301 investigations Washington was conducting, Bessent said, adding that those investigations were expected to conclude by July.
Bessent also said that US President Donald Trump’s visit to China – expected for later this month – was not tied to Beijing’s position on the Strait of Hormuz.
“If the meeting for some reason is rescheduled, it would be rescheduled because of logistics,” he said, adding that any change in timing would be related to a decision by Trump to remain in the US because of the war with Iran.
A day earlier, the Financial Times quoted Trump as calling on China to aid US efforts to reopen the strait, saying that he would prefer to know Beijing’s position on the waterway before he travelled to China.
Iran closed the vital shipping artery in response to American and Israeli military strikes on the Persian Gulf nation in late February.
“It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there,” the US president said, adding that waiting until the summit would be “too late”.
The Chinese foreign ministry said on Monday that both sides were in contact over Trump’s state visit.
