1. Walk through the “24 Hours in the Life of a Swiss Cuckoo Clock” exhibition
The cuckoo clock and its gentle coos may have become the object of tourists’ attention these days, but its mechanism and design are still very much iconic of Swiss savoir-faire. The students at Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD) have taken it upon themselves to reinvent this enchanting timepiece. They came up with innovative ideas to produce 24 ingenious projects that tell time through the cuckoo’s repeated song. Take a walk through the inventive and delightful staging of the cuckoo clocks, which will be exhibited in Asia for the first time at Watches&Wonders following spectacular reception at top institutions in Paris, Langenthal, Boston and Montreal.
 
2. Attend a master class with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH)
Hoping to join the ranks of the watch cognoscenti? Get a taste of fine watchmaking in the one-hour workshops organised by the FHH Greater China Mission. China may be the luxury watch industry’s biggest market right now, but not many people understand the intricate details and mechanism of these horological designs. Hoping to educate the masses and help preserve the future of fine watchmaking, the FHH launched the Greater China Mission last year and will be bringing a series of demo classes to Watches&Wonders, introducing the art of horology to a growing group of enthusiasts in Hong Kong and China.
 
3. Meet the exhibiting maisons’ watchmakers
Aside from trying on the exquisite timepieces, many of which are exclusive and limited editions, don’t miss the chance to find out what goes on behind the scenes. Many of the exhibiting brands, including Cartier and Montblanc, will be flying their watchmakers to Hong Kong. A series of workshops hosted by these watchmakers will be held at the booths. At Cartier, visitors will be able to try their hand at filigree work or watchmaking by disassembling a movement. Or head over to Montblanc, where visitors will be able to work on a balance wheel.
 
4. Keep an eye out for celebrities
Rumour has it that celebrities and friends of the brands are in town. Watches&Wonders has become a hotspot for celebrity spotting. Cate Blanchett, Peter Lindbergh and Zhou Xun turned heads last year at the IWC Portofino gala. This year, Hugh Jackman is said to be in Hong Kong the same week to promote a movie. An ambassador to Montblanc and a watch enthusiast himself, we won’t be surprised to see the famous actor browsing through the booths as well.
 
5. Join the L’Ecole Evening Conversation
If you are one of the lucky few to get an invitation to the L’Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels Evening Conversation, it is an opportunity not to be missed. The luxury brand has invited Francois Farges, a professor of mineralogy at the National Museum of Natural History (Paris), and Gislain Aucremanne, art historian and professor at L’Ecole, to host a two-hour open discussion and dialogue on the legendary Sun King’s Blue Diamond at Duddell’s on September 29.
