Singapore ground handler SATS has apologised after one of its employees was filmed tossing passengers’ luggage onto a conveyor belt at Changi Airport, in a video that drew scrutiny partly because Changi has long been ranked among the world’s best airports.

SATS is a separate aviation services company that provides ground-handling services at Changi, which is operated by Changi Airport Group.

The minute-long video, posted on social media on Sunday, showed a worker in a blue shirt moving large suitcases, wrapped bags and boxes onto a baggage belt at Terminal 2’s arrival hall, with some items appearing to land heavily as another crew member stood nearby.

The footage was recorded at about 5.15pm on Thursday at Belt 31, according to Instagram user Eric Yoong, who posted the clip and questioned whether such handling was acceptable at the Singapore airport.

“I don’t think that’s the correct way for a baggage officer to handle those unclaimed luggage by throwing it back to the luggage belt instead of placing it back nicely or leaving it at the side,” Yoong wrote in the post.

SATS apologised in a statement to the media released on Tuesday, acknowledging that the conduct fell short of the company’s expectations.
