China has confirmed that its J-10CE fighter went undefeated against Eurofighter Typhoon jets during nine simulated air combat exercises in 2024.
State broadcaster CCTV reported last week that the aircraft won all nine of its engagements in simulated combat against the multi-role fighter, without specifying the details of the exercise or which countries took part.
However, Pakistani media reported that the mock battles took place during the “Zilzal-II” joint air exercise in Qatar in January 2024. During the drill, Pakistan’s J-10CE fighter jets defeated Eurofighter Typhoons belonging to Qatar’s air force.
According to Pakistani media, the J-10CE jets won all five of their close-range dogfights and claimed victory in four mock battles fought beyond visual range.
Several media outlets in Gulf countries also reported results consistent with the data revealed by CCTV.


The J-10 was originally developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation in the 1980s as a single-engine, multi-role third-generation fighter.
In 2017, the J-10C was unveiled and entered service as a 4.5-generation fighter, becoming one of the flagship products of China’s defence industry.
The J-10C is equipped with advanced engines and an active electronically scanned array (Aesa) radar, and is armed with weapons such as the PL-10 and PL-15 air-to-air missiles.
Its export version, the J-10CE, made its commercial debut in 2020.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a fighter jet jointly developed by Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain in the 1980s. It entered service in several European countries in 2007. Pakistani media reported that Qatar had bought the more advanced Tranche 3A variant of the jet.
US defence news outlet Military Watch noted that the CCTV disclosure offered rare insight into the J-10C’s combat capabilities, highlighting the maturity of China’s fourth-generation fighter technology.
Military Watch said the results of the Qatar exercise would continue to put pressure on the international market prospects of the Eurofighter Typhoon, as users – including its developer – were rapidly reducing their reliance on the aircraft.
Song Zhongping, a military analyst and former People’s Liberation Army instructor, said that the disclosure of the simulated combat results would be a significant boost for the J-10C’s export prospects.
“However, due to many countries’ geopolitical position, countries that actually choose to purchase the J-10CE fighter jet will need considerable courage,” he added.
“The main markets for the J-10C are likely to be some countries in Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East.”
CCTV’s revelation came one year after the J-10CE’s live-fire combat debut.
In May last year, Pakistan said that its J-10CE aircraft had shot down Indian fighters, including at least one French-made 4.5-generation Rafale jet.
This marked the first known air-to-air kill by a Chinese fighter jet in actual combat, and also the first loss of a Rafale fighter jet in combat.
Pakistan is the only country besides China known to possess the J-10C fighter. The South Asian nation has bought 36 J-10CE jets – about 20 of which have entered service – and around 250 PL-15 missiles.
Beijing is promoting its fighter jets as a competitive alternative on the international arms market. Indonesia, Bangladesh and Egypt have all expressed strong interest in purchasing them.
India Today reported on Saturday that Pakistan might have delivered a JF-17 Block III fighter jet combat simulator to Bangladesh – a signal that Dhaka is considering buying the aircraft.
The JF-17 Block III is a 4.5-generation fighter jet jointly developed by China and Pakistan.
