Private hospitals raise fees by up to 44.6 per cent
At least seven private hospitals in the city have raised their fees over the past six months citing rising operating costs. Matilda International Hospital on The Peak led the way with fees for surgery, plastic surgery and diagnostic imaging services increasing by about 10 per cent, while the cost of breast and pelvic ultrasound screening services surged by 42.1 per cent and 44.6 per cent respectively.

Tutorial offers after-class help for three-year-olds
A tutorial centre for kindergarten pupils offered pen-writing classes to children from three years old, saying they would be trained to recognise and read 100 new Chinese characters a month. Boz Education also offered classes for children to sit past exam papers from elite kindergartens. Dr Ian Lam Chun-bun, assistant professor in early childhood education at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, said such courses would only make children develop negative feelings about learning. Lam recommended parents cultivate children’s interests and motivation to learn instead.

Baby dies on Cathay flight from London to Hong Kong
A Hong Kong-bound Cathay Pacific flight from London had to make an emergency landing in Almaty, the largest city of Kazakhstan, on Sunday when a French-Chinese baby fell into a coma. The four-month-old girl, who was reportedly suffering from a gastrointestinal illness before the flight, was confirmed dead on arrival in Hong Kong.

Famous Malaysian durian has cheap Thai copycat
Fruit vendors in Yuen Long and Yau Ma Tei were found to be selling lookalikes of Musang King, a top-class durian species from Malaysia, calling it “Musang King from Thailand”. Reporters followed up at stalls after a customer complained about the taste of one of the durians he bought for HK$95 in Yuen Long. A fruit supplier said the real name of the copycat was Golden Phoenix, a much cheaper Thai species.

Three free newspapers will dominate, says Metro boss
Metro News Media owner Kenny Wee said the free newspaper market would be dominated by only three titles in future – but he did not say which three. Wee was talking about the difficulty of running a newspaper in the city after Ming Pao sacked its executive chief editor Keung Kwok-yuen on the grounds of cutting costs.

Rise in younger patients developing colorectal cancer
Patients with colorectal cancer, which has become the city’s No 1 cancer, are getting younger and about 10 per cent are below 40, said Professor Justin Wu Che-yuen, director of Chinese University’s Sin Hang Ho Centre for Digestive Health. Wu said the number of people under 50 diagnosed with colorectal cancer had grown rapidly in recent years, and that the incidence among patients aged 20 to 44 had increased 17 per cent to 215 in 2013, compared with 10 years earlier. However, the waiting time for a colonoscopy at public hospitals is months or even years as tens of thousands of people are on the list. A patient with terminal lung cancer reportedly has to wait two years for a colonoscopy at Queen Mary Hospital after showing symptoms of colorectal cancer.
