Hong Kong airport’s Terminal 2 will reopen later this month, with several airlines to relocate their check-in operations from Terminal 1 as part of expansion plans linked to the three-runway system.
The phased move, starting on May 27, will mainly involve regional and low-cost carriers, including HK Express and AirAsia group airlines.
Terminal 2 was reconfigured under the airport’s three-runway system project.
Here is what travellers need to know.
1. Which airlines are moving to Terminal 2?
The Airport Authority said 15 airlines, mainly operating regional routes, will relocate their check-in counters from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 in phases between May 27 and June 10.
Confirmed carriers include HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay Airlines and AirAsia group airlines.
AirAsia said all international flights operated by Malaysia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Philippines AirAsia would shift their check-in operations to Terminal 2 from May 28.
Affected passengers will be notified via their registered contact details and the AirAsia MOVE mobile app.
HK Express, one of the airport’s largest low-cost carriers, said it would relocate to Terminal 2 on June 10. The airline said the move would improve passenger experience through expanded capacity and greater use of self-service check-in and boarding facilities.

Here is the full list of airlines and their moving dates:
May 27: Hong Kong Airlines
May 28: AirAsia, Batik Air (Malaysia), Hainan Airlines, Philippines AirAsia, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air
June 2: Cambodia Airways, IndiGo, VietJet Air
June 3: Bangkok Airways, Greater Bay Airlines, Jeju Air
June 9: Cebu Pacific
June 10: HK Express
2. What should HK Express passengers do if flying on June 10?
Passengers flying with HK Express on departures before 4am on June 10 should check in at Terminal 1.
Those with departures at or after 4am should check in at aisle U on the seventh floor of Terminal 2.




3. What should travellers using Terminal 2 look out for?
Passengers travelling with airlines that have moved to Terminal 2 should allow extra time, as the initial reopening phase will cover check-in, security and immigration facilities only, while boarding gates remain connected to Terminal 1.
After clearing immigration at Terminal 2, travellers will need to take the airport’s driverless automated people mover to reach departure gates in Terminal 1.
Travellers arriving by Airport Express should also pay attention to signage, as the rail platform connects to both terminals.
According to airport guidance, train doors on both sides may open to allow passengers to exit towards either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, depending on the platform set-up.
4. What facilities will Terminal 2 include?
Other than the Airport Express, 29 bus routes connect to Terminal 2.
Motorists can also drive to the facility and park at Car Park 3, which is directly connected to Terminal 2 and offers hourly, daily and long-term parking.
The Airport Authority said the revamped Terminal 2 would feature new passenger facilities, expanded amenities and increased use of self-service and smart technologies.
The terminal will include nursing rooms, charging stations and access to restaurants, shops and lounges, including 24-hour pay-in lounges with showers, as well as a “Caring Corner” for passengers with special needs.
