Hong Kong police have arrested two drivers linked to a viral video showing two trucks allegedly racing and cutting across cutting lanes, on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Ip Chi-kuen, senior superintendent of the investigation and support division of West Kowloon Traffic, said on Sunday that a 48-year-old non-Chinese man and a 51-year-old local man were arrested in the afternoon at Tsing Yi and Lok Ma Chau checkpoints, respectively.
“Online video footage showed the drivers speeding, repeatedly crossing double white lines, and sounding their horn without cause – creating life-threatening situations for other road users – inside the Central Kowloon Bypass, tunnel,” he said.
“Police launched an immediate investigation and located the identity of the two drivers after reviewing extensive surveillance camera footage, both inside the tunnel and from the ‘SmartView’ initiative.”
SmartView is a government-led initiative to install surveillance cameras in public places with high crime rates and pedestrian traffic, in a bid to safeguard national security and prevent crime.
The vehicles involved have been seized for examination, and both men remain in police custody.
