The local media should contribute to telling good stories about Hong Kong amid global turbulence as the city formulates its first five-year blueprint to align with national development, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has said.

He spoke at the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong’s annual press awards ceremony on Friday, where the South China Morning Post took home eight prizes.

Lee said the local media was not only a witness and a recorder of events, but also needed to contribute to the progress of the city and mainland China.

“In the face of the current turbulent and ever-changing global situation and geopolitical developments, I believe that media professionals will uphold their professional ethics and adhere to the core values of enhancing the interests of the country and Hong Kong,” he said.

Lee cited a Chinese saying as he set out his expectations for the media, calling on members to uphold their virtues and professional standards, contribute by telling the stories of the country well and produce high-quality reporting to ensure an accurate and professional record of the times.

“Outstanding journalists will bravely shoulder their mission, with lofty aspirations to contribute to national development,” he said.
