Accident marks city’s second fatal crash involving elderly cabby in less than one week

A 65-year-old taxi driver has been arrested after his vehicle collided with a pedestrian, who later died in hospital, marking Hong Kong’s second fatal crash involving an elderly cabby in less than a week.
The pedestrian, 87, died after he was struck and trapped beneath the taxi while crossing the road under a footbridge in Tung Chung on Monday.
The fatal accident came five days after police arrested a 70-year-old taxi driver who killed a woman, 39, and severely injured her dental clinic colleague, 31, after losing control of his vehicle and mounting a pavement in Ngau Tau Kok. The 31-year-old woman died on Monday.
At 6.23am on Monday, police received a report of the crash at the junction of Man Tung Road and Kin Tung Road, near the Caribbean Coast residential estate. The taxi was travelling on Man Tung Road towards Kowloon at the time.

According to photos from the scene, the front of the taxi was dented, with the vehicle stopping near a pedestrian crossing.
