Taiwanese bartender uses cocktails to tell Quemoy stories amid rising war threat
Just a short boat ride away from mainland China, self-ruled Taiwan’s frontline island of Quemoy welcomes millions of tourists every year. Although cross-strait tensions have deterred some from visiting, bar owner Powei Lee has tried to lure visitors by incorporating the island’s unique history into his cocktail menu. One drink, called “pick and eat”, uses soy, ginger and biscuits – foods consumed during a 1958 cross-strait propaganda campaign. Lee said he wants patrons to take home not just souvenirs, but also an experience to remember.
