102-year-old becomes oldest person to climb Mount Fuji, sets new Guinness World Record

A Japanese centenarian, who in August 2025 became the oldest person to summit Mount Fuji, says he could not have done it without the help of his friends.

Kokichi Akuzawa nearly gave up during his trek to becoming the oldest person to summit Mount Fuji at the age of 102. The achievement was recognised by Guinness World Records after he summited the iconic Japanese mountain in early August. Akuzawa climbed to the top of the 3,776-metre (12,390ft) peak on August 5, 2025, with the help of his 70-year-old daughter, her husband and some friends.
