The student-led National Citizen Party has joined an electoral alliance with the Islamist Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party.
After spearheading Bangladesh’s 2024 uprising, the student movement now seems on the brink of being sidelined ahead of the country’s general elections. A large part of the movement has joined the National Citizen Party. The self-proclaimed centrist party hoped to gain political representation in parliament to represent the aspiration of Bangladesh’s youth. But political miscalculation and a lack of an ideological backbone have led many to feel disillusioned with the party’s promises.
