Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has led her ruling coalition to a landslide victory in the lower house election, securing a historic supermajority. The bloc won 352 of the 465 seats, with the LDP alone taking a record 316 seats, in the election on February 8, 2026. The result sent Japanese stocks to a record high as US President Donald Trump congratulated Takaichi on her win. Some voters, however, voiced unease about the dominance of one party and its implications for Japan’s relations with China and the United States.
