In the empty streets of Namie, former Fukushima plant worker Toru Akama makes the daily round of feeding dogs and cats left behind by his neighbours when they fled the nuclear disaster triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan’s northeast coast on March 11, 2011. Over the course of 15 years, Akama has taken in scores of animals, rehomed more than 1,000, and spent almost all of his disaster compensation money to feed and house the stray cats and dogs of Namie. It is a mission he sees as both a burden and a path to redemption.
