Beijing has slammed the visit by former British prime minister Liz Truss to Taiwan as she called on allies to strengthen economic engagement with the self-ruled island in the face of pressure from mainland China. Truss started her five-day trip on May 16, 2023, the first by a former British leader to the island since 1996. The Chinese embassy in London slammed her visit as a “dangerous political show” that would escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
