Psychiatric hospitals in China’s Hubei province linked to national health insurance fraud

The government in China’s Hubei province is investigating alleged medical insurance fraud by multiple psychiatric hospitals, according to a February 4, 2025, report in the state-run People’s Daily newspaper. It cited an undercover investigation, published by The Beijing News one day earlier, that found some institutions had lured and admitted long-term patients who did not need to be kept in hospital. Institutions reportedly fabricated medical records and service charges to embezzle funds from the National Healthcare Security Administration.
