Shenzhen malls install smart glass restroom doors that turn transparent to expose smokers

Two Shenzhen shopping centres have installed hi-tech glass that becomes transparent when it detects smoke on the men’s toilet cubicle doors. The system was introduced in jewellery malls Shuibei International Centre and Gold Plaza in August 2025, in an effort to prevent people from hiding in restrooms to smoke. It has received positive feedback from shop owners and shoppers alike, according to a member of staff at Gold Plaza.
