Coronavirus: Hong Kong’s border quarantine loophole with the Chinese mainland?

On February 8, 2020, the Hong Kong government closed most of its land borders with the nearby Chinese mainland, and ordered anyone crossing those which remained open to undergo two-week quarantines as part of an overall effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus that first emerged in central China. 

But residents of Chung Ying Street have been exempt from the travel restrictions because of a historical quirk, where one side of the street is in mainland Chinese territory and the other in Hong Kong. 

Several residents told the South China Morning Post that until February 26, there was no quarantine for residents coming in from the mainland side of Chung Ying Street.
