Days after the deadliest fire in Hong Kong in decades, crews across the city were seen removing nylon netting and bamboo scaffolding from buildings. The work over the November 29-30, 2025, weekend follows Beijing’s announcement of a nationwide inspection of fire-safety standards in high-rise buildings across China. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, attention has turned to the materials covering the buildings, which may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. An official safety code of practice calls for protective nets, screens and plastic sheeting on scaffolding to have appropriate fire-retardant properties.
