Haiti’s future in limbo as country’s top gang leader issues warning to transition council candidates

Violence appeared to be flaring up in Haiti again days after its prime minister Ariel Henry agreed to resign. Henry’s resignation came as armed gangs plunged the country into anarchy. But Jimmy Cherizier, the powerful gang leader who rose from a former police officer to become Henry’s biggest opponent, said it was only “a first step of the battle”. On March 14, 2024, he warned political leaders against taking part in a planned transition council.
