Afghan resistance museum revamped under Taliban rule
The museum no longer has a ‘hall of fame’ gallery featuring portraits of mujahideen commanders, including some who fought against the ruling Taliban.
Afghanistan’s Jihad Museum, featuring exhibits about the victory of Afghan fighters over occupying forces from the former Soviet Union, has been revamped since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. The faces of human figures in a display about civilian suffering and anti-Soviet resistance have been made blank, with their mouths, noses and eyes plastered over. The Taliban government bans depictions of living beings under its strict interpretation of Islamic law.
