Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed, the country’s state media reported on March 1, 2026. The confirmation came hours after US President Donald Trump asserted Khamenei’s death on social media. He called Khamenei “one of the most evil people in history” and said the strike delivers justice for Iranians, Americans, and others “killed or mutilated” by him. The US and Israel struck several locations across Iran on February 28, 2026, and Iran responded with retaliatory attacks on several US assets in the region. Beijing joined a growing chorus of international alarm, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry delivering a stern response to the strikes. However, in a display of diplomatic caution, it stopped short of issuing an outright condemnation.
