Fuel price increases sparked by the war in the Middle East have caused long queues for petrol across Asia. In Hong Kong, an increasing number of drivers are heading north to fill their tanks in mainland China. While fuel prices on the mainland have also gone up, they are still about a third of the cost than in Hong Kong. In other parts of the region, authorities have taken drastic measures to ration limited fuel supplies. Pakistan has introduced a slew of austerity measures, including shutting schools for two weeks. Meanwhile, Iran’s new supreme leader said in his first public address that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway that Middle East oil and gas travels through, will remain blocked as long as the US-Israel war against his country continues.
